To filter by a particular topic and see a smaller section of the data, make a selection on the dropdown “Filters” menu or click “Search” to do a keyword search. Hover over the abbreviated filter tags in the blue boxes to see the complete name of the filter, or click a filter to display all the data with this tag. An amendment to the Homestead Act, the Desert Land Act deeds land in the West to settlers who promise to irrigate the land and prepare it for farming. The Act offers 640 acres to couples who promise to irrigate the land within three years, and half that amount to a single man. Land is available for $1.60 an acre.
