This psychiatric institution is the first west of the Appalachian Mountains to open. The first patient is a Black woman and the hospital quickly grows after its opening. The following year overcrowding and sanitary conditions lead to the creation of another wing, and another wing the year after. Today, it is called the Eastern State Hospital.
