The leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, and President George H. W. Bush declare the end of the Cold War, which has been a war of political tensions between the Soviet Union and the U.S. that has held both countries captive with a nuclear arsenal pointed at each other for years.

The announcement is made at the Malta Summit in December 1989.
