The act expands on the Civil Rights Act of 1968 to: "protect people from discrimination when they are renting or buying a home, getting a mortgage, seeking housing assistance, or engaging in other housing-related activities" (HUD, n.d.).

It also requires accessible housing units to be built in new multi-family public and private housing.
