The first large-scale clinical trial of a complementary and alternative medicine is launched.
Date: 1997
The trial is launched by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), NIMH's Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), and the Office of Administrative Management (OAM).
It tests St. John's Wort, an herb, as a treatment for major depression. The results show it has some effects for minor depression, but not for major depression.
