The first World Health Organization strategy on traditional medicine is established.
Date: 2002
The strategy focuses on the role of traditional medicine in health care systems, and identifies current challenges and opportunities for inclusion and integration. The strategic report also focuses on the World Health Organization's (WHO) role and strategy for traditional medicine, recognizing that "traditional medicine" is primary medicine in some regions of the world and is considered "alternative medicine" in other areas.
WHO's first strategy focuses on four main areas: "national policy and regulatory frameworks;" "safety, efficacy and quality;" "access;" and "rational use" (WHO, 2002).
