With so many white nurses serving in World War I, the American Red Cross is not prepared for the flu epidemic. Multiple Black nurses step in to provide care, even though they have been prevented from practicing in white hospitals up until this point.

Some hospitals stick to their commitment to white supremacy, and do not allow Black nurses to practice even if it means they are severely understaffed. Other hospitals change their regulations, and in some cases become almost completely staffed by Black nurses.
