The Jane Collective begins meeting in Chicago.

Date: 1969

RHRR
ABOR

This is a hotline referral system for abortion. Callers can leave their name and number and receive a call back and an appointment to help navigate the experience of obtaining an (illegal) abortion.

The collective is initially composed primarily of white women with class privilege, but this will shift as wealthy women begin to travel to New York for obtaining legal abortions.

The hotline will then focus primarily on supporting women without economic access to legal abortions. Eventually, the Jane Collective will also provide abortions themselves, leading to the arrest of seven members. The collective will remain active until Roe v. Wade is passed–legalizing abortion across the U.S.
