The malaria epidemic severely impacts Indigenous communities in the Northwest.

Malaria has not previously existed on the northwestern side of the Rockies. Over the course of three years, 92% of the Indigenous communities will be killed due to malaria. It is believed that missionaries carried malaria in their blood when they went into California and Oregon, thereby infecting local mosquitoes with the illness.
