The National Black Environmental Justice Network (NBEJN) is formed in New Orleans during an emergency meeting of leaders who convene to: "map out strategies to address environmental and health disparities in Black American communities" (NBEJN, n.d.).

A national action plan emerges from the meeting. Its focus is on sustainable development, Superfund site relocation, land loss, and health, among other issues.
