The association is founded thirty years after the dissolution of the National Association of Colored Nurses.

Black nurses gather in caucus and decide to establish their own organization. In particular, their goals are to unite Black nurses to influence healthcare services for Black people, and to promote the inclusion of Black people in nursing education and leadership positions.
