Published by Charles Colcock Jones, an advocate of slavery, the book focuses on the spiritual life of enslaved Black people and calls for their forced Christianization. In particular, Jones reflects on how Christian religious instruction can "support" increased docility among enslaved Black people. This book has been cited as having a singular powerful impact on the move to force the end of traditional African spiritual practices. The book recently went back into print.
