Partnering with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, the Rockefeller Foundation spends millions on dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) with the intent of exterminating all mosquitoes. Their first experimental campaign is to rid Sardinia of mosquitoes. After completely dousing Sardinia, almost all insect populations disappear. As a result, the island sees high agricultural yields for a number of years. The devastating ecological impact of DDT is largely unexamined in this era.
