The Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs is created.

Date: 1968

POV
PH
FAT

The federal committee is founded with a focus on hunger and starvation as an aspect of poverty in the U.S., although they will eventually shift to focusing on chronic disease and diet.

The committee's chairman, George McGovern, states that: "too much fat, too much sugar or salt, can be and are directly linked to heart disease, cancer, obesity and stroke...” (La Berge, 2008), which is a continuation of an oversimplified narrative that particular food groups, especially fats, are single-handedly to blame for health issues.
