To filter by a particular topic and see a smaller section of the data, make a selection on the dropdown “Filters” menu or click “Search” to do a keyword search. Hover over the abbreviated filter tags in the blue boxes to see the complete name of the filter, or click a filter to display all the data with this tag. The Southern Homestead Act passes.

The Act makes 46 million acres of public land owned by the federal government available for private purchase in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The Act is organized similarly to the Homestead Act but with intent to make land available for purchase to freed Black farmers. Within ten years, under the rise of Jim Crow and the push against Black land ownership, the Act will be repealed.
