President Nixon abandons the gold standard for the U.S. dollar. This is intended to allow the Federal Reserve to manipulate the dollar to lessen the occurrence of inflation and recession, provide higher employment, and stimulate strong economic growth. In practice, however, it will send the United States into the worst economic state it has seen since before World War II.
