The U.S. Food and Drug Administration orders the destruction of quinacrine pellets.
Date: 1998
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) orders researchers and "population control" advocates Dr. Elton Kessel and Dr. Stephen Mumford to destroy their existing supply of quinacrine pellets.
Quinacrine is an intrauterine pellet used for sterilization in over 20 countries, often without the individual's consent. After the U.S. halts production and sales, Kessel and Mumford state that: "arrangements have already been made to manufacture and distribute quinacrine overseas."
The worldwide sterilization crusade will continue to manufacture quinacrine in Switzerland, arranging for its distribution to a network of doctors, nurses, and midwives to administer it.
Quinacrine causes permanent sterilization by creating scar tissue in the fallopian tubes. Although the long-term side effects are still unknown, quinacrine sterilizations have a number short-term side-effects that include burning and irritation of the vaginal walls, cervical stenosis (a narrowing of the cervical opening), uterine adhesions, and perforation of the uterus.
Quinacrine, which will later be named as a potential treatment for COVID-19, continues to be used as an antimalarial today.
