The U.S. government carries out biowarfare testing on U.S. residents without consent.
Date: 1966
In order to test methods for covert biological attacks and track how people respond, U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) scientists fill light bulbs with Bacillus subtilis (then known as Bacillus globigii) spores and then smash them open on the tracks of the New York subway.
The bacterial spores travel for miles around the subway system. They cover the clothes of thousands of civilians who also breathe them in. The scientists conducting the experiment claim that the bacteria is harmless, and that the lack of response shows that a covert attack is possible.
