The U.S. Supreme Court rules that Native nations are sovereign "domestic" nations.
Date: 1831
This is an erosion of tribal sovereignty, as it no longer acknowledges Native nations as being "international" nations and instead understands them as "domestic" nations, which erodes but still maintains the peer-to-peer, nation-to-nation status. In 1832, President Jackson defies this law, and, ignoring his responsibility to respect national boundaries, calls for the removal of the Cherokee people from their lands. This is an act of war, and is a violent disrespect of national boundaries and national agreements.
