In the first guidelines for a healthy diet released by the USDA, the author breaks foods down into five basic groups: milk and meat, cereals, vegetables and fruits, fats and fatty foods, and sugars and sugary foods. Over the next few decades, the USDA will revise the food groups routinely and shift their focus from addressing hunger and poverty to focusing on diet, weight, and chronic disease. A profound gap will develop between a growing focus on the diets of educated white children versus those of children living in poverty and children of color.
