Theodore Roosevelt passes the Antiquities Act to "protect" Indigenous sacred sites from looting.
Date: 1906
With the Antiquities Act, the U.S. government asserts its role as the owner and protector of sacred and cultural Indigenous sites. Congress and President Theodore Roosevelt intend to protect these sites from the waves of arriving settlers looting and destroying them, despite the fact that many of these sites have only recently been emptied of Indigenous people by force and/or treaty. The Act won't be utilized by an Indigenous community to protect their own sacred sites for another 110 years.
