Between January 1, 1892 and November 29, 1954,12 million immigrants will be inspected and interrogated at Ellis Island to determine if they are "fit for America."

Some of these practices of sorting and categorizing include inspectors measuring body parts, including the size of people's' heads, to "determine" intelligence and criminality, and marking people with chalk if they have disabilities.
