Carl Erickson and Mike Schmidt are selected to participate in a tuberculosis study to test a tuberculosis vaccine at Denver's National Jewish Hospital. While the two men consent to participate in the study, the trade for their participation is to be released from incarceration.

Carl Erickson reflects at the time: "I don't want to die, I volunteered to help so I could get out of here." While Schmidt grows quite ill, both men survive the test and are released.
