This act is an attempt to control how enslaved African people gather, warning against the potential "plotting" that takes place during "feasts and burials." Carrying of weapons, leaving areas designated by the slaveholder without permission, and physical resistance–including for self-protection or refusing forced labor–are all deemed acts of insurrection, with various levels of physical punishment as a result.
