In response to public demand for separate sanatoriums for Black people and high rates of tuberculosis in the Black community, white care workers to begin asserting that there are different kinds of tuberculosis. Doctors a the Lower Harlem Chest Clinic call for research to disprove this, arguing that the racial differences are because care for Black patients is about 40 years behind care for white patients due to racism and poverty.
