At least 146 Lakota are killed by the U.S. Cavalry at Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota for performing the ritual Ghost Dance. The U.S. government uses violence to stop a spiritual movement focused on reconnecting to traditional ways, and rejecting the ways and practices of white people. The Wounded Knee Massacre happens alongside multiple other massacres as white settlers continue to push into the plains.
