The Spanish-American War is fought over the control of resources held by Spanish colonies. It ends in victory for the U.S.–marking the end of the Spanish Empire in the Caribbean and Pacific. The U.S. takes control of Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Guam, as well as temporary control of Cuba.
