B. K. S. Iyengar publishes Light on Yoga.

Date: 1966

TFCM

Iyengar's focus is on marketing yoga to Westerners. His book shares 200 asanas and results in a range of Iyengar practice spaces opening across the U.S.

At this point, there are more and more teachers arriving in the U.S. They bring different forms of yoga and establish centers around the country.

Critics of Iyengar question his assertion that yogic teachings represent an unbroken line of ancient teachings and that he is an authoritative teacher in relationship to those teachings. These critiques also point out that he teaches yoga as a postural exercise approach without fully honoring the older, more spiritually-oriented teachings of yoga. This sets the stage for the commodification and cultural-appropriation of yoga in the United States.
