Depo-Provera begins to be used as a form of chemical castration of "sex offenders."
Date: 1966
Depo-Provera is "a well-known brand name for medroxyprogesterone acetate, a contraceptive injection that contains the hormone progestin" (Mayo Clinic, 2022) that will later be marketed as birth control.
It begins to be used as a form of "chemical castration" in nine states for incarcerated people who have caused sexual harm in an attempt to limit rates of recidivism. This is often done as a condition of parole.
