In the landmark case of Brown v. Board of Education, the U.S. Supreme Court rules that segregating public schools along the line of race is a violation of the Equal Protection Clause under the Fourteenth Amendment, as Black and white schools are inherently unequal. The case overrules the previous precedent set by Plessy v. Ferguson, which asserted "separate but equal" public schooling institutions were constitutional.
