These scales provide the first opportunity for Americans to "measure their body weight to the nearest pound" (Czerniawski, 2007). The "penny scale" first appears in grocery stores and drug stores, then expands to railroad stations, movie theaters, and other public spaces. This is the first time the general public can weigh themselves without visiting the doctor.
