Concept of “neurasthenia” coined to refer to symptoms caused by overwork and urbanization.
Date: 1869
The condition is named by neurologist George Beard. "Neurasthenia" is thought to be a result of urbanization and of living in the fast-paced environment of industrial work pressures. The term is framed in the context of what is now termed "burnout." Common symptoms of the average person living with this condition include chronic nervousness; stomach upset; fatigue; chronic pain; depression; irritability; and sexual dysfunction, including infertility. Neurasthenia is often diagnosed in the context of competitive businessmen and women with an active social life in this era.
