Interest in the physical exercise component of yoga begins to spread in India, strongly aligned with anti-colonial movements, as physical strength is seen as an aid in fighting back against colonizers. A mixture of western and Indian exercise forms begins to emerge, all falling under the name of “yoga.” European gymnastics, naturopathy, and Indigenous Indian physical forms are combined by Indian teachers. Asanas, a form of physical therapy and training, spread across the country with encouragement from the Indian government.
