Dr. Roman, a Black physician and former head of the National Medical Association, calls on doctors, lawyers, and teachers to: ‘‘battle with the avatars of prejudice who have entered the arena of public discussion to serve cast and discrimination under the banner of Medicine." He says: ‘‘conduct and conditions, not race, are the determining factors in disease and death. Nature is impartial as well as inexorable" (Patterson, 2008).
