"Hemp for Victory" campaign launched.

Date: 1942

During World War II, hemp and other materials used to produce military supplies become scarce. The U.S. Department of Agriculture launches "Hemp for Victory," giving out seeds to farmers to produce hemp and giving military deferments to those willing to stay "home" and grow the plant. By 1943, American farmers registered in the program will have harvested 375,000 acres of hemp.
