Author Jessica Mitford foregrounds a critical analysis of the use of incarcerated people as research subjects by prison facilities and pharmaceutical companies as a means for capitalist exploitation. She reports that one medical researcher she spoke with proclaimed to her that incarcerated people are "fine experimental material" for medical research "and much cheaper than chimpanzees" (Dober, 2008).
