White policymakers often ignore public health safety measures that would support Black communities in this era. The rates of infectious diseases, such as syphilis, tuberculosis, and polio, are therefore distinctly racialized. The mortality rate of Black Alabamians in Montgomery is twice that of white Alabamians.
