In the case Regents of the University of California v. Bakke, the U.S. Supreme Court rules that the admission process of the medical school at the University of California at Davis is unconstitutional, as the school sets aside 16 of its 100 seats for Black, Chicanx, Asian, and Native students.

Advocates for the policy argue that affirmative action policies are essential for addressing the effects of discrimination and the need for more doctors of color.
