With an increase in people seeking illegal abortions comes an increase in self-induced abortions. During this time, urban hospitals began to identify "septic wards" for women with infections resulting from their self-induced abortions. The majority of these women are living in poverty and/or are Women of Color unable to afford the costs of private, under-the-table abortions.
