With plantation owner Sanford Dole as their leader, an all-white group of planters, called the "Committee of Safety," organize a coup with the help of the U.S. military. This leads to the surrender of Queen Lili'uokalani and the U.S. annexation of Hawai'i as a U.S. territory five years later.
