Access to the growing field of professionalized health care is organized and paid for in many different ways between 1900 and 1940. Unions, businesses, farmers’ associations, consumer cooperatives, African-American fraternal orders, and ethnic mutual aid societies all experiment with different ways of providing medical care for their members. Some of the first prepaid care strategies emerge as doctors offer medical care in exchange for a set monthly fee.
