The American Association on Mental Deficiency pushes for the institutionalization of people with disabilities.
Date: 1893
The association's president, Walter E. Fernald, says that the institutionalization of people determined to be "mentally deficient" is economical and efficient for the "greater social good" more than it is charitable. These views will be used to justify the construction of more institutions, and the rise in the institutionalization of people with disabilities.
