The American Sugar Trust forms, building a sugar monopoly.

Date: 1887

The Story of Sugar
SUG
CORP

“Eight leaders in the American sugar industry form the American Sugar Trust with the intention of reducing production to increase prices and profits for all of their companies. After acquiring more companies, they change their name to The American Sugar Refining Company (ASRC). They close facilities they deem inefficient and combine others with ones they already own, essentially fixing the price of refined sugar" (Mucci, 2017).

In 1900, they will create the Domino Sugar brand, bringing all of their production under this single name. By 1907, they will control 97% of all sugar production in the United States.
