After a Black high school student tried to sit underneath a tree where only white students usually sat, white students hung nooses in the tree in retaliation the next day. Tensions escalated until a school fight ensued, in which a white student was left with bruising and a concussion. Six Black students, ages 15 to 17, were then arrested and charged with attempted murder and conspiracy, facing up to 100 years in prison.

For many, the case of the Jena 6 illuminates the profound racism in how young Black people, particularly boys, are treated by the U.S. judicial and police system.
