Martha Beall Mitchell, wife of U.S. Attorney General John Mitchell, is diagnosed with a "paranoid mental disorder" for claiming that the administration of President Richard M. Nixon is engaged in illegal activities. Many of her claims will later be proved correct.

The term, the "Martha Mitchell Effect," is then used to describe accurate claims that are dismissed as "delusional" when they are not.
