The Western Health Reform Institute, later "Battle Creek Sanitarium," is established.
Date: 1866
The institute is a therapeutic care center that is focused on wellness and relaxation for the upper classes. The Kellogg brothers, the founders of the institute, focus on a low-fat, low-protein vegetarian diet, lots of fresh air, and exercise. The sanatorium will both expand and develop a range of "new" treatment modalities, including different forms of hydrotherapy, physical therapy, massage, and health food. The Kellogg family works to develop a range of "healthful" food products, including Kellogg's corn flakes, to support their wellness work.
