The World Health Organization intensifies its global smallpox eradication campaign.

The campaign helps contain the last European outbreak in Yugoslavia in 1972. The World Health Organization (WHO) will declare that the disease has been eradicated in 1980, with no acknowledgement of the links between the spread of smallpox and colonization and urbanization.
