The Young Lords are established in Chicago by activist Cha Cha Jiménez to fight against gentrification, police brutality, and racism, and for self-determination for Puerto Rico and other nations. They model their organizational structure after the Black Panther Party’s ministerial structure, and conduct political education classes in homes.

Their work will also include taking over the Lincoln Hospital and imagining a People's Hospital where healthcare is free, leading: "to one of the first patient’s bill of rights in history, the first recorded public medical trial after an incidence of malpractice, the creation of an innovative acupuncture clinic, and the eventual construction of a new Lincoln Hospital after many years of empty promises" (Lefty, 2021).
