Up until World War I, the U.S. Pharmacopeia specified that medical cannabis only come from the flowering tops of the Indian variety cannabis indica. In 1913, the U.S. hybridized a version equal to the Indian variety and shifted its cultivation to U.S. soil. By 1918, 60,000 pounds are being produced annually, all from pharmaceutical farms east of the Mississippi.
