The American Medical Association opposes compulsory schemes of health insurance.

Date: 1920

The American Medical Association (AMA) makes its first official declaration of opposition to any compulsory scheme of health insurance controlled by any state or the federal government.

In the 1920s, the cost of medical care is rising, as physicians' incomes and prestige grows. Advances in medical technology have led to an increase in the number of hospitals and the number of patients seeking hospital care. The AMA comes out in opposition to any government-controlled schemes of health insurance in order to prevent a reduction (or stabilization) of the rapidly increasing physician salary scale.
